Experimental physics and robust measurement

The 2008 annual report of the Second Institute of Physics at Justus Liebig University Giessen lists Martin Petrick’s dissertation, “Construction and testing of a novel separation method for exotic nuclei at relativistic energies”, among the completed doctoral theses. The work sits firmly within experimental nuclear physics and the development of demanding measurement and separation methods.

The journal article “Online test of the FRS Ion Catcher at GSI” appeared in Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research B in the same year. The GSI Repository lists Petrick as first and corresponding author. The paper documents the experimental testing of an apparatus for slowing and capturing short-lived ions.

Passing on scientific method

Later public records place Dr Martin Petrick at Theodor-Heuss-Schule Wetzlar. The school magazine documents a physics advanced course led by him in 2024; the official subject page describes teaching in which experimentation, documentation and the systematic derivation of physical relationships are central elements.

The programme for the 2022 Central Hesse regional competition also lists him as a Jugend forscht jury member. This work combines expert assessment with supporting young people as they pursue their own scientific and technical questions.
